Homemade Salve

Salve is a staple on a homestead or a go-to for a natural product using household. I have been making salve for our home for years. It can be cheaply made and is a good replacement of medical ointments sold from the store. The recipe that I always keep on hand contains an herbal blend that combats multiple ailments, including bug bites, bee stings, and poison ivy.

Jewelweed and plantain are my star ingredients because they can be easily harvested, and they contain so many benefits. I also use calendula, chamomile, and lavender for calming and healing  properties.

So, how does one acquire the benefits of these herbs? I extract the constituents of the herbs through slow oil infusion. I place the dried herbs in a mason jar and cover the herbs with extra virgin olive oil. I then allow the jar to sit in a cool, dark area for 4-6 weeks. I will periodically (usually weekly) shake the jars.

After the infusion, I drain off the olive through cheese cloth. When my herbal infused oil is ready, it is time to make the salve.

I use coconut oil and beeswax as my thickening agents. Coconut oil has anti-microbial effects, and beeswax is not only a good stiffening agent, it has benefits as well. I also love that I will now be able to use the beeswax that is rendered from the honeycomb on our beehives.

I love adding honey to my salve. Honey on its own have some many healing benefits, and is a vehicle to anti-microbial properties. I remember in my earlier years of nursing, when I was working the medical surgical unit I had a surgical patient who had a open wound. The orders given by the surgeon was to apply honey packets to the wound every dressing change! We had done this because we had no medical honey (Medihoney) at the time for wound care. I would encourage you to not pass on the honey!
